This course aims to familiarize the freshmen with E-E dictionaries and other advanced learner’s reference tools, attune their pronunication, and activate their linguistic corpus built in middle school. New linguistic phenomena as word formation rules, idiomatic expressions, and phrasal verbes are introduced and explained. Students’ linguistic sensitivity and creativity are cultivated through such drills as texts adapting and abridging, independent phrasal and sentene translating, and simplified novel reading. A comprensive independent English learning strategy is initiated and exercised in this course, and a solid linguistic preparation is laid for a higher level study.
