The morning after my teacher came she led me into her room andgave me a doll.

Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of somethingforgotten--a thrill of returning thought; and somehow the mysteryof language was revealed to me.

That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, setit free! There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers thatcould in time be swept away.
