Do Looks Really Count?

“Wow, that guy is so handsome and he attracts my eye, I am got enchanted.” “Look, that girl with black and bushy brow, slim lips and beautiful face. How charming she is.” We always hear our friends and classmates talk about it. They hold the view that appearance is to a person what water is to fish. They believe looks plays the most important role in one’s life. For my part, I am of the opinion that looks or appearance can not be the decisive factor through one’s lifetime. Looks have nothing or little to do with one’s life, e. g. one’s marriage, one’s success, and one’s true beauty.

First, looks have little effect on marriage. Some people choose attractive girl or boy as their spouse, this is their principle. They build love on external beauty. But have you heard that “A black man is pearl in a fair woman’s eye.”（情人眼里出西施）Through this we can easily see that If you truly love someone, you will not mind his or her looks. You will build your love on sharing similar hobby, similar lifestyle, similar goals and so on and so forth... If the two really love each other, they think beauty is not worth a straw. They think he or she is one in hundred. In their eyes, he or she is the most beautiful one in the world as the craw think his own bird fairest. They will live to old age in conjugal bliss until they die.

Second, appearance may affect one’s success in some field, such as fashion show, the fashion model must be beauty in face. But in most cases, It does not count. Everyone knows that Zhu Yuan Zhang- the emperor of Ming Dynasty was so ugly that no one can draw a photograph for him. Because he was emperor, If the photograph dose not look like him ( you dare not draw him like him, because he is ugly) or truly like him, in both situation you will be punished. But this was the man --- the ugly man who use his energy, encourage, passion, bravery and his ability to establish a strong kingdom and govern china for many years. We often say “ It is your attitude, not your aptitude,

that determine your altitude.” We can also say “ It is your ability, not your appearance, that determine your achievement.

Third, people usually pay much more attention to looks, they point out that is the true beauty. Everyday they spend lots of time making themselves up. They use as many as ways make them stood out. Do they really beautiful? Surely they have not had a true definition about beauty. In my opinion, true beauty is not your looks but your internal qualities. Whether you are kind–hearted, thrifty, whether you are keen to help others or have appropriate moral principle. This is my understanding of true beauty. Just as the old saying says “ Beauty is a good servant but a bad master.” Do not pay much attention to looks or you will become the servant . We should spend time cultivating our internal qualities.

So, good looks is not always a advantage. With the time flies, everyone will grow old and ugly no matter how beautiful you were in youth. In the grave, the beautiful and the ugly lie equal.
