Good morning, dear judges, I am the first competitor. It’s really a great honor to have this opportunity to share my teaching design with you. Today, my topic is Unit 4, “what can you do? ”.
Well, I am going to introduce my lesson from the following aspects. The first part is about the analysis of teaching materials and students. This unit is from the primary English book published by Foreign Language Teaching And Research Press, the first semester of Grade Five. The topic of this unit is about some recreational and sports activities, and talk about what students can do. After learning this, students can talk about their hobbies with each other, so that their listening and speaking abilities can be improved.
My students are from Grade Five. They are active and curious about new interesting things. And they have learnt English for almost two years, but most of them are not confident to open their mouths and express themselves. Therefore , I will arrange more interesting activities to provide them more chances to speak English.
The second part is the analysis of teaching aims. According to the new curriculum standard, I set up three teaching aims.
Knowledge aims:
The students can master the new words and phrases as well as sentence patterns.
The ability aim: Students can talk about their own abilities freely.
The emotional aim: Students can cultivate more hobbies in their spare time and enjoy communicating with others.
Let’s talk about the key and difficult points: The key points are to master the meaning of the new words and phrases and the usage of the sentence pattern, “what can you do ”, “I can” .
The difficult point is how to talk freely and naturally by using the new knowledge.
About my teaching methods , I will mainly use task-based teaching method, communicate approach, situational teaching method and TPR(Total Physical Response) teaching method. I think it is only through a variety of teaching methods that students can focus on my class. At the same time, I will try my best to diversify the forms of practice and teaching activities.
Now let's move to the most important part, the analysis of teaching procedures. My teaching procedures can be divided into four parts: step 1 is warming up, step 2 presentation and practice, step 3 production, step 4 summary and homework.
Firstly, I will greet students as usual in order to provide them an English learning atmosphere. Then I'd like to let them enjoy a song named “what can you do?”. Listening to a song is a good way to attract students attention to the new class. And this song is so related to today's topic. And it will lay a good foundation for the following steps.
In step 2, presentation and practice, I will teach them new words and phrases as well as the sentence patterns. When teaching the new words, I will set up a situation and tell them : “Miss White says: going to hold an English party, and do you want to know what students in her class can do?” Then I will show the pictures and lead them find the answers. Through this, students can learn the new words. The new words are dance, do Kung fu, sing English songs. and draw cartoons. Well, in this activity, situational teaching method is adopted. Creating a situation and showing pictures can make my lesson more vivid and interesting.
At the same time, I will pay attention to do the reactions and interactions with them. For example, when I am talking about the word “do Kong fu”, I will ask them who in our class can do kong fu and invite him to make a performance for us. Then I will tell the others that doing Kong fu is a good exercise to keep fit. Through this activity, emotional aim of cultivating more hobbies in their spare time can be achieved.
Then I will let them play a game named “act and guess”. In this game, TPR teaching method is used. Playing games and doing actions can make students more interested in this class and let them have a better understanding of the meaning of the new words.
About the sentence structures, I will teach them in a direct way, just tell them: if you want to ask someone’s ability, you can use “what can you do?”. But if you want to answer this question and talk about your owns,you can say, “I can do something”. Then, I would like them to make a conversation with their partners, and then play it by using the rhyme we have learnt at the very beginning of the class. I think using the above rhyme can maintain their attention to my class.
In the production process, I want them to do a group work. Group work is a good way to develop their abilities of cooperation and communication. I will let them work in group of five and do a survey about what their group members can do. And then, I will invite some groups to share their findings, this activity can let students apply a target language into a real situation.
After this activity, I will make a summary about today’s lesson. When I do that, I always ask students to read the new knowledge. I think this can make sure that students will be the subject of the class. At the end of the class, I will leave them a task, let them do another survey about what their friends can do. This can consolidate what we’ve learned today?
