Simulated Writing: Summary
Introduction
A summary is a condensed form of a document that represents its full sense. It should restate the author’s main point, purpose, intent and supporting details in your own words and contain only the author’s views. A effective summary can demonstrate understanding to someone in a senior position, allow readers to decide whether they wish to read the full document, provide an interdiction of the document to those who don’t have time to read it, and provide yourself with a better understanding of the document.
Procedure for Report Writing
Read the article carefully. Determine its structure. Identify the author’s purpose in writing. To write a good summary it is important to thoroughly understand the material you are working with. Reread, label, and underline. Look for section headings, bolded or italicized words, and subheadings. Divide the article into sections or stages of thought. Label, on the passage itself, each section or stage of thought. Underline key ideas and terms. Write one-sentence summary, on a separate sheet of paper, of each stage of thought. This should be a brief outline of the article. Write a thesis—a one-sentence—summary of the entire article. The thesis should express the central idea of the article, as you have determined it from the preceding steps. You may find it useful to keep in mind the information contained in the lead sentence or paragraph of most newspaper stories—the what, who, why, where, when, and how of the matter. For persuasive passages, summarize in a sentence the author’s conclusion. For descriptive passages, indicate the subject of the description and its key features. Note: In some cases a suitable thesis may already be in the original passage. If so, you can quote it directly in your summary. Write the first draft of your summary by combine the information from the first four steps into paragraphs. In either case, eliminate repetition. Eliminate less important information. Disregard minor details, or generalize them. Use as few words as possible to convey the main ideas. Check your summary against the original passage, and make whatever adjustments are necessary for accuracy and completeness. Revise your summary, inserting transitional words and phrases where necessary to ensure coherence. Check for style. Avoid series of short, choppy sentences. Combine sentences for a smooth, logical flow of ideas. Check for grammatical correctness, punctuation, and spelling.
Other Useful Information
Cover the original as a whole and include any important ideas, data and conclusions. Use a simple organization:
(1) main points; (2) main results; (3) conclusions/recommendations.
Follow the original organization where possible and use the author’s key words. Use 3rd person and present tense.
Present in your own words and quote the author sparingly, if at all.
Do not include anything that does not appear in the original, e.g. your own opinion. Make the summary clear and understandable and stand on its own. Be concise and brief and keep summary short: 3 to 7 sentences.

The Internet of Things (IoT)
The definition of “Internet of Things” has still some fuzziness, and can have different facets depending on the beholder. Considering the functionality and identity as central it is reasonable to define the IoT as “Things having identities and virtual personalities operating in smart spaces using intelligent interfaces to connect and communicate within social, environmental, and user contexts”. A different definition, that puts the focus on the seamless integration, could be formulated as “Interconnected objects having an active role in what might be called the Future Internet”.
The semantic origin of the expression is composed by two words and concepts: “Internet” and “Thing”, where “Internet” can be defined as “The world-wide network of interconnected computer networks, based on a standard communication protocol, the Internet suite (TCP/IP)”, while “Thing” is “an object not precisely identifiable” Therefore, semantically, “Internet of Things” means “a world-wide network of interconnected objects uniquely addressable, based on standard communication protocols”.
The set of actions that the future objects should be able to do is a matter of research. In general, enabling the object to know its common properties such as creation, recycling, transformation, ownership change, or use for different purposes will enable objects or things of the physical world to interact actively and decisively with the environment. For example, the integration of communication capabilities between RFID tags, sensors and actuators is seen as a very important area which needs to be studied together with the integration of such devices into hybrid wireless sensor networks that are characterized by modularity, reliability, flexibility, robustness and scalability.
