A Report on Titanic Survivor: the Story of Harold Bride
作者:高一(12)班 潘露
In Titanic Survivor: the Story of Harold Bride (Beijing: Qunyan Press, 2009), Paul Shipton tells the story of one of the worst disasters at sea which Harold Bride goes through when he is only 21 years old. The Titanic makes its first voyage from England to the United States. But it is heading for disaster. The Titanic, which is called “Queen of the Seas”, is the “the biggest…and the best” (page 5). Harold Bride starts a new job as a radio operator on the ship. He becomes good friends with Jack Phillips, who is the Senior Radio Operator. The beginning of the disaster is on Sunday, 14th April. The Titanic strikes an iceberg and it starts sinking. Children and women are allowed to leave first. A few minutes later, they realize that it’s too late to wait for other ships, so some passengers prepare themselves for the end. However, Phillips continues to work in the radio room as water is getting into it. “Incredibly, the band still played” (page 22)! At last the Titanic is gone. Luckily, Harold Bride spends the rest of the trip to New York in the radio room of another ship, sending messages to passengers’ families and friends on land. I benefit a lot from reading this story. On the one hand, I know we should pay attention to everything, even though they are small. In the story, if Captain Smith had paid attention to the warnings, the disaster would not have happened. On the other hand, we should put other people’s lives above our own. During the sinking of the Titanic, many people gave the chance of life to the women and children. They were selfless. What’s more, Phillips was also brave. He cared about other people more than about himself. Because he knew his job was the most important for passengers to be alive, he didn’t leave until the last moment. I was really impressed by their good qualities. I’m proud of them!

A Report on Titanic Survivor: the Story of Harold Bride

In Titanic Survivor: the Story of Harold Bride (Beijing: Qunyan Press, 2009), Paul Shipton tells the
story of Harold Bride, who was only 21 years old when he got a job aboard the Titanic. But Harold played a part in one of the worst disasters at sea the world had ever seen.
The Titanic was the biggest and most famous ship built to make its first voyage from England to the United States. It took Harold’s breath away when he first got onto the Titanic. On Sunday, 14th April, they “received a few warnings from ships about ice ahead” (page 8). But Captain Smith was not worried about the “unsinkable” Titanic and some passengers could not believe the Titanic would sink. But, incredibly,
the ship was really going to sink! Then “the crew had begun to load passengers into lifeboats” (page 11). And Phillips continued to work in the radio room. Finally, they abandoned the cabin and he saw his friend alive. Harold was plunged into the ice water because of a huge wave. Luckily, he was pulled up out of the water. “At 2.20 a.m. the Titanic was gone” (page 23).
I was impressed with the bravery and selflessness of the band and Jack Phillips. For example, when the remains of the ship was sticking right up out of the sea, the band still played! The band gave hope to people by playing music. And when water was getting into the engine room, Phillips continued to send and receive messages. Phillips tried his best to help others. He put others’safety above his own. Titanic Survivor is a remarkable book. Paul Shipton teaches us a vital lesson: we should be calm and brave when we are in trouble. We also can’t be careless like Captain Smith. Small things might be the fate of many people. But I think we need to love our own lives.

A Report on Titanic Survivor: the Story of Harold Bride
作者:高一(9)班 周世园
In Titanic Survivor: the Story of Harold Bride (Beijing: Qunyan Press, 2009), Paul Shipton tells the
story of Harold Bride, who survived one of the worst disasters at sea the world had ever seen. Harold, a ship radio operator, sent lots of messages for rich passengers on the Titanic.
Harold Bride was only 21 years old when he got a job aboard the Titanic. This huge ship was to make its first voyage from England to the United States. But it was heading for disaster. Another radio operator named Phillips lost his life in the disaster. And Harold was saved by others. He spent the rest of the trip to New York in the radio room of the Carpathia, the ship that came to rescue them, sending messages to passengers’ families and friends on land.
I was impressed after reading this story because there were many brave and selfless people on the Titanic. Although most of them died in that disaster, they will encourage me forever. They gave the chance of survival to the women and children. For example, “Incredibly, the band still played” (page 22)! “The water had reached the deck outside our cabin, but still Phillips didn’t leave the wireless. He continued sending more and more messages” (page 17). He cared about other people more than about himself. They are real heroes!
Titanic Survivor tells us that we can’t prevent disasters from happening but we can try our best to help others who are in trouble.
