IntroductionThe old man and the seais a novella written by Hemingway in 1952, a modern American novelist, and is the last novel published before his death. Once it was published ,it aroused strong international repercussions and caused a Hemingway feverin the literary circles at that time. Santiago, an old Cuban man, did not catch any fish for 84 consecutive days. Despite the teasing of his companions, the left of his companion ,on the 85th day, he continued to sail alone with his boat and finally caught a big marlin twice as big as his fishing boat. Because the fish was so big, he dragged his boat in the sea for three days before he was exhausted and finally killed. The old man tied the bleeding fish to the stern of the boat ,but it attacked the sharks. He struggled with the sharks with an insist spirit and kept driving them away. At last, when he returned to harhour, the big marlin had only a huge white skeleton left. In the battle with the sea, the big marlin and the shark, Santiago is constantly facing the challenge of unfortunate fate. With his courage and perseverance, Santiago challenged the limits of human life, and overcomed the doom and surpassed it. Although the novel is short, the writer successfully portrays Santiago with optimistim, confidence and a strong will. The novella once again proves Hemingway's unshakable position and outstanding achievements as an outstanding American novelist in the 20th century. The novel has won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Key WordsThe Old Man and the Sea Santiago never give up confident

He was beaten repeatedly, but never gave up the idea of looking for hope; he failed repeatedly, but never lost heart; he almost died, but again ignited the anger of victory in fearlessness; he was a man who feared neither difficulties nor failures, he was the leading character in the novel-Sandiago. At the beginning of the novel, the author describes the protagonist Santiago as a thin and haggard old man, and it is such an old man who shows his spirit of perseverance and courage in the struggle

with the marlin fish. The sharp contrast between the former and the latter makes readers deeply impressed. The old man, with the spirit of never admit defeat, his boat which carried countless loneliness and suffering. For him, the sea is full of challenges, the seemingly ordinary old man is actually interpreting his extraordinary experience and life. As the saying goes: Don't judge heroes by success or failure. His strong will and brave spirit are not inferior to the hero's behavior, which is worthy of our advocacy. While fishing at sea, Santiago suffered loneliness, failure and natural invasion. After several days and nights of struggling with the big marlin, he still failed to bring the whole Marlin back to shore. Perhaps in the eyes of others, he was a failure, but in my opinion, he was a persistent winner who refused to lose.

The story of the old man not only symbolizes the relationship between man and nature, but also the indestructible spirit of the whole human race. Although he failed in real life, he was a winner in spirit. Every time Santiago goes to sea, it is the hope of victory. This vicious natural environment and tough attitude towards life are also the reasons why this novel is enduring. Life is an endless pursuit. In the story, the old man once said, People are not born for failure. A person can be destroyed, but can not be defeated. This is a spirit, a belief, an ideal, and the famous saying that everyone should remember. Santiago's experience tells us that no matter when the storm will pass, we should not give up the ideal of life, no matter what happens, we can not be defeated. As long as you have faith, you can move forward! From this point of view, this book is not a fable, nor a fairy tale, but a realistic work. Victory is no longer important in this novel, what matters is the value of one's life. The old man dares to challenge the limit and surpass it time and again. The spirit of the old man mades us admire him. He brings human confidence, a strong spiritual strength, a failed hero and a spirit never to give up.

In the novel, the old man dreams of lions more than once. The lion represents the spirit that the old man actively rises up and never fails. It represents the dream that the old man pursues constantly, and also represents the brilliance that the old man once had. Even if he encounters many setbacks, the old man will rise up and bravely face it. He will set out again to pursue his ideal, and people can be destroyed,

but the spirit will never be defeated. The old man has also been brilliant, and won the championship. In his old age, Santiago has no need to prove anything. There is a kind of humility and confidence in him. In his mind, there is no war, no nihility, no dim honor. Even though he has not caught fish for eighty-four days, the old man is still optimistic. He firmly believes that he can catch the big fish. Santiago is indifferent to victory or defeat, and only in this way can he go fishing ambitiously again under such circumstances. The old man's courage and self-confidence in fighting are innate.

Failure is not terrible. The terrible thing is that you give in to the failure. Once you give in, all your dreams will not come true. It has important meaning in our real life. I think life is like an old man fishing in the sea,you should face it bravely. Even if you don't succeed, you won't regret your life because you work hard to do it. We will also be the strongest person in our life, and our life will be the same. Because we made great efforts.

After reading the book “The Old Man and the Sea”I feel that I have added courage and strength to overcome difficulties. No matter how many thorns and setbacks there are in the way of life, I believe that only with the quality of old people who refuse to give up, I will become a strong person in my life. “The Old Man and the Sea"is a book worthy of reading and studying, it can let us gain courage and strength before the storm. Let us face all difficulties confidently like Santiago and persevere to the end and never shrink back.
