比较级
1 to 表示比较
介词to 可用来表示比较,源出拉丁文。表示比较时,to 通常用在以-or结尾的形容词后面,再接被比较的对象。这类形容词不多,常见的又superior(优于), inferior(劣于,低于), senior(年长于), junior(年幼于), anterior(早于), prior(较先于), posterior(后于) 等,多用于书面语:
Bob’s strength is superior to mine.鲍勃的力气比我大。
Open-door policy is superior to closed-door policy.开放政策比闭关政策优越。 My knowledge is inferior to yours.我的知识不如你。
Colored people are by no means inferior to white people.有色人种决不比白人低劣。 Your father is senior to hers.你的父亲比他的父亲年纪大。 He is senior to me. 他的职位比我高。
In respect of age, I am his senior. 论年纪,我比他大。 My brother is my senior by two years. 我哥比我大两岁。
His appointment is junior to mine by six months. 他的任命比我的迟六个月。 His arrival in New York is posterior to that of his brother.他比他的兄弟后到纽约。 I called on him prior to my departure.我动身前去拜访了他。
2 beside 引申义“与„„相比”
Curtis isn’t very good at mathematics, but beside Roger, he is a genius at it. 柯蒂斯数学不太好,但与罗杰相比,他已经是天才了。 3 above above 表示比较
A. (better than; more than)(在质量、价值等方面)胜于„„,重于„„ Health is above wealth. 健康比财富重要。
I value honor above life. 我把名誉看的比生命重要。
A statesman should put the interests of the public above everything else. 政治家应把大众的利益看得高于一切。
B. (higher in quality than) (表示品质、行为、思想力等方面)超过;不属于;不至于 He is far above me in knowledge of history and geography. Tommy is above meanness. 汤姆是决不允吝啬的。
Mr. Roberts is above taking profits for himself. 罗伯茨先生不屑为自己谋利。 The public official is very honest; he is above bribery. 这位公务员很正直,他不会受贿的。 C. 否定式:be not above„ “不耻于„„”
If we want to learn well, we must not be above asking questions. 我们想要学得好,就得不耻下问。
The girl is not above telling a lie if it will serve her purpose. 只要能达到目的,撒撒谎那姑娘是无所谓的。
4 of 可表示比较
of 和than 一样,也可用于两者之间的比较,但of和than的结构不一样。 ... + 比较级+ than+... Jim is more stupid than Tom. ... +the + 比较级+ of the two... Jim is the more stupid of the two(boys).
5 than 做介词的一些常用短语
① more...than meets the eye/ ear 隐藏在背后的东西
On the first reading the plan looked all right, but there was more to it than met the eye. 乍一看,这个计划很好,但背后还有问题呢。
Everybody says there is more in his statement than meets the eye. 大家都说他话中有话。
② more...than... 与其„„倒不如说;是„„而不是„„ Jimmy is more mad than stupid.
