English Final Assignment : The old man and the sea

·A brief introduction of author :

Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 - July 2, 1961) was an American writer . He is generally thought to be a member of the Lost Generation . Some people say that , of the many characters he created in his books , the author himself was his best creation. He grew up in Oak Park , Illinois , near the midwesten city of Chicao . He was the second child in a family of six . His father was a doctor . His mother was a painter and a pianist . At home in Oak Park , Ernest wrote for his school newspaper . He tried to write like a famous sports writer , Ring Lardner , and he made his writing skills better .

In 1917 , Hemingway decided not to go to a university . Ernest found a job with the Kansas City Star newspaper in Kansas City , Missouri . Hemingway worked for the newspaper for nine months . And that period also made his wrriting skills better that before . ·Background

The Old Man and the Sea is a short story , written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. The book was written by Hemingway , who worked for the newspaper for nine months . He then joined the Red Cross to help on the battle fields of Europe . At that time , his job was to drive an ambulance and to take wounded soldiers off the battlefield .

·Introduction of the novel

It was the last major work of novel to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime . The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of a battle between an aging , experienced fisherman , Santiago , and a large marlin . The aging Cuban fisherman , who struggled with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream , is so unlucky that he got almost nothing . Finally he caught a big Marlin alone , but the fish was so big that he

dragged his boat on the sea for three days before being exhausted , and was killed and tied to the side of the boat . On his return journey , he was attacked by another shark and returned to port with only a fish head and a spine .

The book was dedicated to the memory of Maxwell Perkins , Hemingway 's literary editor . The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works which played a huge part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature . ·After reading

As for me , I am sure it is one of the most meaningful stories that I have ever read . It is brief , without a flowery word , just like the tip of the iceberg , simple-clear , fresh and biting . And , in my opinion , The Old Man and the Sea is a product of this theory which took the theory into practice .

What impressed me most is the vivid characters of the protagonist . The old fisherman is a character allowing the imagination of his creator to operate simultaneously in two different worlds of meaning and value , the one real and dramatic , the other one moral .

Also , like most great stories , it can be read on more than one level of meaning . From Santiago , I understand the unconquerable spirit of human being , which is a creature capable of snatching spiritual victory from circumstances of disaster and material defeat . I think it is the another meaning of the story as well as what the author was eager to express .

As the saying goes , A man is not born to be defeated , you can destory it , but you can not defeated it ! I think , The Old Man and the Sea wants to expree not only the story of the old man , but also the lofted spirit and the motivation to try ones best to do the work .

In the life , instead of complaining and withdrawing, we are expected to bravely meet the difficulties , diligently plays our own role , frankly swing and , do our own heroes , are my hearts direction . Salute the old man , Sandiego ; and do my own hero .
