The Idea of A University

“The Idea of A university”was written by an educator called John Henry Newman.The book mainly talks about the meaning and significance of university education and how to fulfill its responsibilities of educating students.In his time,many universities in Europe had taken action to meet the demand of cultivating engineer,lawyer,accountant and other professionals.It seems that it’s beneficial for the graduates to find a good job after this reform.However,the author was strongly against this reform.He maintained that university should be a place where spreads universal knowledge.Moreover,he reckoned that only when students accept liberal education can they become true students in universities.Undoubtedly,it’s obvious that every subject is connected to other subjects so we can not only pay attention to our major but ignore other field.Nowadays,it’s falsely believed that philosophy is useless because almost nobody can get a job if they choose it as a major.It’s absolutely wrong.In the belief of the author,philosophy classes should be involved in every major.The reason why he held this opinion is that university is not a factory,the purpose of a university is not making products,but making gentlemen who behave well and have their own dignity.Further more,he regarded universities as places where inquiry is pushed forward,and error exposed,by the collision of mind with mind,and knowledge with knowledge.

The idea of liberal education reminds me of my own experiences.As a freshman of my university,I don’t know the true meaning of university at the beginning.I innocently believed that the only task of me is becoming a professor in my field so that I can have a bright future.However,everything changed after a public speech.Before that,I have no idea what liberal education is.In the speech,the speaker conveyed a message that it’s not enough for a student from law school to learn law only.It is liberal education that offer us a chance to know more about other fields of social science.Moved by the speech,I decided to accept liberal education.Frankly speaking,it’s not a easy task to learn other subjects because I have no spare time to learn them except the liberal class I attend once a week.Even though I encounter many difficulties,I am happy that my teachers who are so eminent in the field of liberal education teach us with great enthusiasm.My teacher has a talent of visualizing the difficult theory so that I am not baffled by the problems.The more I become inquisitive in liberal education,the more I fall in love with its beauty.I gained many things through liberal education.Firstly,I learn learning other subjects like philosophy and history may be not so difficult as it may seem as far as I stay inquisitive and don’t give up.More importantly,by learning many theories of social science,my horizons are expended and become easier for me to understand our society and human civilization.Thirdly,I am surprising that I hear our law teacher referred to some events that I had learned when I accepted liberal education,which proved the idea that every subject is related to other subjects so it is beneficial to learn more things.I supposed that it is particularly advanced for Newman to come up with the idea of liberal education.

In addition,I approve of the idea of critical thinking.In the past,what we should do was to accept all the knowledge,otherwise we would fail the college entrance


exam.However,it is not responsible for the undergraduates to listen to their teachers only.In my perspective,reading is a good way to cultivate our ability of critical thinking.Only with it can he put forward valuable objection against the professor.In western countries,especially those in Harvard and Oxford,has a large number of books to read.On the contrary,undergraduates in China have a tendency to read their textbook only and spend plenty of time in playing violent computer games.Consequently,their abilities vary when it comes to critical thinking.What’s more,there are many reasons that result in our low ability of critical thinking.As is known to all,in ancient times,teachers in China have absolute power against their students.In Chinese teachers’ mind,what students need to do is to obey the rules and keep silent in the class.Nowadays,it seems that some Chinese teachers are still unwilling to accept the opinions.When I was young,perhaps when I was in my primary school.I was active in the class and I liked to point out some mistakes when the teachers give classes.However,my teacher regarded my opinions as intolerable noises and she punished me after class,which hurt me a lot.Luckily,teachers in our school are usually open-minded and encourage us to be active in the class.I still remember that our constitution teacher told us that he disapproved of the idea that teachers should infuse knowledge in repetitious instruction.Moreover,he conveyed a idea that students are equal to their teachers and what teachers need to do is to share his own thoughts in the class and different opinions should be permitted.Furthermore,it is normal that academic opinions differ among professors,thus we should try hard to find out the differences among them and come up with our own thoughts.It’s my personal belief that university should be a place open to all academic theories and debate should be allowed.Only with this can our academy make progress in the future.

Finally,I appreciate another idea that put forward by Newman.He considered that learning knowledge is a good preparation for more knowledge,which means that we should keep thinking and reading in our daily life and passing the exam is not the only goal of learning.More importantly,with more enthusiasm,we will feel that learning is a significant part of our daily life and we can’t live without it,thus we will no longer take learning as a heavy burden.

Try to enjoy learning,and I strongly believed that we will find the real spirit of university one day.
