Unit 6



Sue and Johnsy are good friends. They found their tastes so much in tune that the joint studio resulted.

But in November a cold, unseen stranger, whom the doctors called Pneumonia, stalked about the district, touching one here and there with his icy fingers. Johnsy was among his victims. She lay, scarcely moving on her bed, looking through the small window at the next brick house. She was unable to speak in a whisper, and she seemed unable to cling to life. It was such a change. She had always been so lively and merry before she fell ill. Now she had this strange belief that once the last leaf on the vine outside fell, she would die. Sue told her it was all nonsense, but to no effect.

It was their downstairs neighbor, Mr. Behrman, who came to her rescue.

Old Behrman was a painter. He was past sixty. Despite looking the part, he was a failure in art. For forty years he had been always about to paint a masterpiece, but had never yet begun it.

When Behrman heard of Jojnsy’s strange fancy he flew into


a fierce temper, regarding it as a sin that one so young should give up life so easily.

Thanks to Behrman, the last leaf never did fall. Late at night he had climbed up and painted the leaf on the wall. But Behrman left us forever. It was his long-promised masterpiece.
