the Stone of Three Incarnations



“三生石上旧因缘”一语,知道的人很多,可是很少有人知道他的出处。考《甘泽谣》云：“唐有李源者,京洛人,父憕,死安禄山之乱。源悲愤,不仕不娶。居惠林寺三十年,与僧圆泽(或作圆观)友善,相约游蜀峨眉山。源欲自荆州溯峡,泽欲取长安斜谷路。源不可,曰,吾已绝世事,岂可复道京师哉。泽默然久之,曰,行止固不由人。(选的出行路线由不得自己,这句话从路线问题想到命运,个人命运不是由自己决定的)

Many people know the Chinese proverb, “the old Karma is on the Stone of Three Incarnations ”，but only a few people know its provenance. A sentence in 《Ganzeyao》（甘泽谣）has been textual analyzed, “ A people who named Li Yuan, lived in Luoyang, the capital city of Tang Dynasty. His father, Li Deng, died from An Lushan Rebellion. Liyuan felt distressed and indignated, and he decided neither to become a government official nor get married. Liyuan lived in Huilin Temple for 30 years, he was a good friend of Monk Yuanze (or Yuanguan). They planned to visit Mount Emei of Shu.( Sichuan province). Yuan wanted to go upstream through the gorgy from Jingzhou, while Ze wanted to choose Xiegulu of Changan. Yuan objected to it, ‘I have already secluded from the secular affairs, how could I return to the capital?’ Ze kept silence for a while, and then said, “The road can’t be chosen on my own.”

遂自荆州入蜀,路次南浦。（路途中间）见妇人锦裆负瓮及汲,圆泽曰,此吾托身之所也。李源问之,泽曰,妇人姓王氏,吾当为之子,孕三岁矣,吾不来,故不得乳,今既见,无可逃者。公当以符咒助我速生。三日浴儿时,公临视,以笑为信。后十三年中秋夜,当与公相见于杭州天竺。

Therefore, they went into Shu through Jingzhou, and passed Nanpu in the middle way. They saw a woman in brocade clothes and jean，using an urn to get water. have already been here, so I can’t avoid it anymore. Please help me bear as soon as possible with a charm. When I am bathing three days later, please come and see me, and I will smile to you as the sign. On the Mid-Autumn night 13 years later, I promised to meet you in Tianzhu Temple, Hangzhou.

源悲悔为具沐浴,易服,至暮,圆泽亡而妇乳。三日往视之,儿见源果笑,源遂不果入蜀,反居惠林。后十三年,自洛适杭州赴其约。闻葛洪亭畔有牧童菱髻骑牛歌《竹枝词》,隔水呼源,观之,乃圆泽也。

Yuan felt sad and repentant, he bathed Ze, and then helped him to change clothes. When the sky got dark, Yuan Ze died and the woman gave birth to a baby. Yuan went and saw Ze smiling as expected three days later. After that Yuan didn’t want to visit Shu, and returned to live in Huilin Temple. After 13 years, Yuan went to Hangzhou from Luoyang for the appointment. There was a buffalo boy riding on the livestock with a bub, and singing Zhuzhici. The boy called Yuan from the other side of the river. Yuan observed him and found he was Ze.

歌曰:“三生石上旧精魂,赏月吟风不用论,惭愧故人远相访,此身虽异性常存。”源问泽公健否? 答曰,李公真信士,俗缘未尽,慎勿相近,原勤修之。

Ze sang, ‘I was the soul of your old friend who had lived for three lives. There is no need to talk about the life of enjoying the moon, and singing. I feel so guilty that you visit me from a place far away. Although, my figure is different, my disposition remains the same.’ Yuan asked Ze whether his live is alright. Ze replied, “You really keep your words! However, my secular paccaya doesn’t end, so I can’t get close with you, only to practice diligently.

又歌曰:“身前身后事茫茫,欲话因缘恐断肠,吴越山川寻已遍,却回烟棹上瞿塘。” 遂拂袖入烟霞而去。

Ze sang again, ‘There plenty of things happened, and I want to figure out the karma, but I am afraid I would feel miserable. I have looked for all the places in Wuyue, now I have to turn the boat back to Qutang.’ Afterwards, he left leisurely and went into the haze.


三生石在下天竺,不出灵鹫的范围。有人说,据此所言,只有二生,何以称三生? 宋赞宁禅师有圆泽三生为比丘之说,似乎可答此问。

The Stone of three incarnations is in Tianzhu, inside Linjiu. Somebody said, “ According to the story, there is only the second time of incarnation, how could it became three incarnations.” The chan master, Song Zanning, knew the other story that Yuan Ze became Bi Qiu for three lives. It may answer this question.
