AN UNFORGETTABLE TRIP TO TIBET
By Vian
Last autumn, I went to Tibet with my whole family. Different from other people, we planned to
drive there. For many reasons I like this way of traveling, it means we can see many beau ful
views on the road.
We had four offroad vehicles, and 10 people. Before we set off, I had been to supermarket to buy
some food and water for prepara on.
We have heard many stories about traveling to Tibet. And we know it is dangerous to drive there,
because during the trip we have to cross many mountains and tunnels, any small mistakes can
make us in danger. But we s ll decided to start this adventure trip at last.
We set off on September 28th. We spend 3 days on driving to Xian. Then we drove through the
Qinghai province. When we arrived at Kunlun Mountain, it was already midnight. And what was
worse was we all suffered al tude sickness to some degree. And in the mountain there was no
hotel to get rest. Some people couldn’t stop vomi ng. Everybody had a very serious headache.
We know at that moment we were facing the challenge. At that me, we saw some lights in front
of the road. We drove to the lights right away. A er 15 minutes, we found a small hotel. And they
have oxygen breathing bag, so we supported each other with hand to get the oxygen bag. When
we met another traveler group we knew that place named Tutu River, with a height of 5530
meters. It shocked everyone. I was not able to fall asleep for the whole night. The doctor suggested some weak people to go back, but no one wanted to give it up. Finally we cross other two mountains and arrived at Lhasa on 3rd October.
Our local guide is Nima, a Tibetan guide who speaks good English. Many Tibetans receive good
English training either in Nepal or India. A er driving eastward 30km, we turned north and crossed the newly built bridge - Qushui Bridge which is above the Lhasa River cruised along the
road up to the city of Lhasa. As one of the five major tributaries of the Brahmaputra River,
the
Lhasa River originates from Nyainqentanglha Mountain (5,020 meters about sea level) on the
Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is 551km long across the city of Lhsa from east to west and its drainage
area covers nearly 30,000 square km.
On the way, 20km from south of Lhasa, we stopped at the Rock Buddha for half sightseeing. The
guide said most of the tour group will stop here to see the rock buddha carving. Nie Tang Buddha
is the largest Buddha image engraved in the mountain face. The Buddha image is 9.83m high and
7.9m wide, a must-see a raction on the 100km-drive from Gonggar to the city of Lhasa. The
image illustrates Shakyamuni buddha gained enlightenment under the bodhi tree. It takes 10
minutes to view and you can take pictures there. I hope you like my travelogue and want to go to
Tibet one day!
