INTRODUCTION
Sports is all forms of competitive activity which is governed by a set of rules or customs such as basketball and soccer. Physical recreation is activity for enjoyment and relaxation such as walking and aerobics. Sports and physical recreation activities play an increasingly important role in people’s daily life.
People have different preferences and motivations in doing sports. Some people participated in sports with purpose of health of fitness. While others took part in sports just for enjoyment and relaxation. According to genders, it seems that females preferred the leisurely sports such as walking and jogging.
Previous research by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) ( 2007) found that more females (32%) than males (27%) did exercises more than twice per week . The ABS (2007) also showed that walking was the most common sport and physical recreation activity among Australians at 25%. In addition, health was the main reason for participating by almost half (45%) of the respondents.
However, little research has been done related to participation in sports and physical recreation activities among overseas students in Australia. The aim of this research is to find out differences and similarities regarding participation in those activities between Australians and overseas students.
