Thoughts on LGBT Visibility and Openness in the Chinese Public
In recent years LGBT people, groups, and events have become very visible in parts of Chinese mainstream public space and discourse. Many LGBT people openly talk about their sexuality; LGBT groups advocate for better understanding and tolerane in the media and public places; and a wide diversity of LGBT interest groups now exist to promote knowledge and acceptance. In some respects, these developments are similar to LGBT advances in many other parts of the world, and Chinese LGBT groups do indeed adopt many strategies from abroad in their work to develop locally useful practices. In this presentation I will make use of some recent LGBT events such as Shanghai Pride, Same-sex marriage campaigns in Beijing, and the Beijing Queer Film Festival to discuss some perspectives on LGBT visibility and openness in Chinese public life, and placed in a context of global LGBT cultures. In particular, I reflect on some key terms, their definitions and consequent problems, such as pride, being open, what it means to be visible, coming out, and the public. By extension, this talk considers the difficult questions of what kinds of LGBT practice is locally effective and desirable (and according to whom), the discrepancy that must exist between ideology and action, and why it is important to consider Chinese LGBT in a global context.
