“怀孕”的另外一种英文表达

这种说法要追溯到19世纪末~~怀孕还可以用“ in the pudding class”或者“pudding way ”来表示，来源于 pudding in the oven，美国人用烤箱烤的一种小包子。

PUDDING HOUSE 肚子或者胃~~

pudding house 是在偶然的情况下被当成肚子来用~~最早这么说的人是托马斯·纳什（Thomas Nashe），1596年的时候他写道：“What a commotion there was in his entrayles or pudding-house for want of food.”换句话说就是：“Your stomach’s rumbling so loud it scared Odin’s ravens.”，肚子饿的咕咕叫，声音像奥丁神的神鸦一样。（奥丁神是北欧神话中的至高神，阿萨神族的神王，天空的人格化，世界的统治者，被称为诸神之父，司掌战争、权力、智慧、魔法和死亡。他头戴大金盔，肩上栖息着两只神鸦，分别象征“思想”和“记忆”。它们每天早上飞遍全世界，回来向奥丁报告它们的见闻。）

NOT WORTH A PUDDING 一文不值

16世纪的时候，“not worth a pudding”就开始成为“not worth a damn”（一文不值、毫无价值）的另一种说法啦~~

These youths of the parish, that are so spruse in their apparell, haue little money in their purses, and their verses and their tales, are not worth a pudding for our trade.”（Oxford English Dictionary）

事态往不好的方向发展

When things go pear-shaped, they’ve gone sideways—in other words, badly.

当事情朝着“梨型”发展就是说明不太好了。同样的道理，pudding-shaped 也是表达事情朝着不好的方向发展了。2004年Daily Star的一篇文章用了这个比较冷门的说法就是：“ Cambridge's season is going distinctly

pudding-shaped following the dismissal of French misfit Herve Renard.”

PUDDING-EATER 皮条客

这是个专业术语，也是个贬义词，格林俚语词典（Green’s Dictionary of Slang）解释为“皮条客”（pimp），所以大家在听到时候要小心使用哦~~

PUDDING-ALE 糟糕的啤酒

Ale是英国的一种浓啤酒，你可以想象一下啤酒里面加布丁，额，简直是黑暗料理……估计这辈子也不想再喝啤酒啦~~如果你愿意的话可以找个勺子尝尝~~

PUDDING TIME 适当的时机

16世纪的时候，pudding time 代表着餐前的祈祷时间，后来用来表示适当的时机，就是很幸运地时间把握地刚刚好~~

To come in pudding time was to arrive at the perfect time.来的早不如来的巧~~

1716年，英国散文家Joseph Addison说：“The ordinary Salutation is, Sir, I am glad to see you, you are come in Pudding-time.”
