Visitors arrived by twos and threes.(参观者三三两两地来到那里。) I saw six or seven people sitting in the room.(我看见六七个人坐在房间里。) That man looks sixty or seventy years old.(那个男人看上去有六、七十岁。)
scores of dozens of hundreds of thousands of tens of thousands of hundreds of thousands of
millions of tens of millions of hundreds of millions of
billions of
如:scores of students,几十个学生;dozens of reference books,几十本参考书;hundreds of thousands of people,几十万人;millions of years ago,几百万年前;billions of calculations,几十亿次的运算。
三.用about, some, around, approximately, in the neighbourhood of,
somewhere about, or so, roughly, round about, or thereabout(s), more or less, estimated等表示在某一数目上下、左右的大约数。如:
about 500 pounds,约500磅;some eighty houses,大约80幢房子;around / in the neighbourhood of / one thousand yuan,约一千元/一千元左右;a population of approximately/roughly 457 million,大约四亿五千七百万人口;a thousand people or thereabout(s),大约一千人;twenty or so questions,大约二十个问题;ten yuan in the rough,大约十元;more or less twenty pages,大约二十页;an estimated 300 books,大约三百本书。
About, some, approximately, roghly等表示大约数时位置居数词之前;or so, in the rough, or thereabout(s)等则居数词之后。
四. 用less than, under, below, nearly, toward, almost, close on等表示“不
less than five minutes不到无五分钟;almost one thousand students,近一千名学生;
nearly twenty million visitors,近两千万游客;towards fifty years old,近五十岁;
close on 20 000 taperecorders,近两万台收录机;less than / below / under eighty yuan,不到八十元;
almost six feet tall(六英尺只差一点) nearly six feet tall(差不多六英尺)
五. 用over, more than, or more, above, odd, upwards of等表示“多于”某
如:more than one year,一年以上的时间;over 35 degrees,三十五度以上;fifty grams and more,五十多克重;eighty dollars,八十多美元;upwards of 300 water pumps,三百多台水泵;
over / more than / above ten days都表示“十天多”,意思一样。 upwards of带有“略多于”(rather more than)的意思。
more than ten days十多天
ten days and more十天多(与前者相当) ten more days再多十天
ten days or more十天或者多一些
六. 用from…to…, between… and…, anywhere between… and…
The population of those inland cities vary from 150 000 to 600 000.
Between thirty and forty people
