George Stubbs Little is known about his childhood,but he is known to have grown up around horses.His father,John,was a cobbler in the leather business,and harness was his chief commodity.The boy followed his family's wishes as a cobbler,but they soon found that his heart was not in it at all.

George soon showed his love for art.He started sketching anatomical drawings when he was about eight.

When he was only about ten years old,his model horse won a prize from the local art association.Stubbs spent his spare time painting without stopping,with no intention of making a career out of his hobby.

Stubbs,in the tradition of painters,had first been taught by a professional painter.His chosen teacher was an unknown local painter named Hamlet Winstanley,but within weeks he had fallen out with Winstanley.The reason for this is not clear,but it is said to be that the disciples took on unrealistic subjects before they had mastered the basic skills.

Young Stubbs was such a go-it-alone,confident young man.Whatever the truth,stubbs is back at Liverpool.For the next four years,her mother,Maiali,supported the family.Stubbs
