1. DIY=do it yourself 自己动手，自己做

Alan was ill, so I went instead.

We’ll have fish instead of meat for supper today.

Give me the red box instead of the yellow one. 把那个红盒子给我，不是这个黄色的。 We'll have tea in the garden instead of in the house. 我们将在花园里，而不在屋子里喝茶。

7. stand for 代表，表示，意味着

X often stands for an unknown number. X常常代表未知数。 What does UFO stand for? UFO代表什么？ 8. pay someone to do it 花钱请某人做它

pay for… 为…付款

9. be crazy about (doing)sth… 对…着迷 10. put in a brighter light 安装/放入一个更亮一些的灯

try 之后既可接不定式，又可接动名词，但含义上有区别。

try to do 意思是“努力去做某事”“尽力干……”，表示想尽一切办法要把事情办成；

I'm trying to learn English well. 我决心（尽力）学好英语。

try doing 意思是“尝试着干某事”，“试着（用什么方法）去做某事”，表示一种试着、做做看的做法。

I tried knocking at the back door, but nobody answered.

我试着敲了敲后门，但没人回答。

fill…with…用…填充…

Jack filled his pockets with chestnuts (栗子).

keep on doing 继续做某事，反复做某事，强调时间的间隔性和动作的反复性，及某人做某事的决心。

14. not only… but also.. /both…and…

不仅…而且…，…和…都… 应连接两个相对称的并列成分。 He plays not only the piano but also the violin. 他不仅弹钢琴，也拉提琴。

注意：not only… but also..连接并列主语时，要用“就近原则” Not only Mr Lin but also his sons are teachers.

I made some mistakes when I wrote the sentence “Happy birthday, Mum.” 我在写“祝你生日快乐，妈妈。”这个句子时，犯了一些错误。

17. advise sb. (not) to do sth 建议某人（不）做某事 some advice一些建议 I advise him to wait. 我建议他等待。
