PRESENT PERFECT

Structure

Affirmative

Subject + HAVE or HAS + past participle *

I have eaten / I’ve eaten You have eaten / You’ve eaten He-She-It has eaten / He’s-She’s-It’s eaten

We have eaten / We’ve eaten You have eaten / You’ve eaten They have eaten / They’ve eaten

Negative

Subject + HAVE NOT (HAVEN’T) or HAS NOT (HASN’T)+ past participle *

I have not eaten / I haven’t eaten You have not eaten / You haven’t eaten He-She-It has not eaten / He-She-It hasn’t eaten

We have not eaten / We haven’t eaten You have not eaten / You haven’t eaten They have not eaten / They haven’t eaten

Use

We use the present perfect to talk about past experiences, actions and events. We don’t say exactly when the action or event happened. Ex: I’ve been to England. We also use the present perfect to describe events which started in the past and continue in the present. They often refer to the recent past. Ex: He’s made a lot of

money.

Interrogative

HAVE or HAS + subject + past participle * ?

Have I eaten? Have you eaten? Has he-she-it eaten? Have we eaten? Have you eaten? Have they eaten?

** How can we form the past participle?

Regular verbs: base form + ed Ex: play played / paint painted Irregular verbs: Past Participle form (=3rd column Irreg V List) Ex: eat eaten / buy bought
