汉语语法—“大概”、“也许”和“恐怕”的差别

Chinese grammar--The difference between 大概，也许 and 恐怕

（副词）都表示推测、估计。

一、“大概”、“也许”、“恐怕”在句中都用作状语，意思很接近。常常可以互换使用。但是意思的侧重点仍有细小差别。

“大概”, “也许”and “恐怕” are used as adverbials in sentence and they are close in meaning, and often exchangeable in use, but there are some slight differences in the way they emphasize.

二、“大概”在表示推测、估计时，带有较强的客观判断性，肯定意味较重；“也许”则侧重于猜测，不定的意味较重；“恐怕”则商量的意味较重。此外，“恐怕”还兼有担心、忧虑的意味，这是“大概”、“也许”所没有的。例如：

When used for referring or estimating, “大概” has a fairly strong characteristic of objective judgment and the meaning of affirmation is expressed strongly. “也许” lays stress on guessing and expresses strongly the indefiniteness. “恐怕” lays stress on discussion. Besides, “恐怕” has simultaneously the meaning of worry and anxiely. “大概” and “也许” haven’t . Example:

他大概有什么事，不然不会迟到的。她最近很忙，也许今晚不来了。

天又变了，恐怕又要下雨了。

三、此外，“也许”有时还可以表示委婉的肯定。例如：

In addition, “也许” also sometimes indicates tactful affimation. For example: 青年人学点儿俩回事也许是十分必要的。对你的饮食严格控制一下也许是有益的。
