英文中who vs whom使用辨析
Many people have trouble with the relative pronouns who and whom for one simple reason: as youngsters in school, they never learned the difference between nominative and objective case. To review:
The subject of a verb is in the nominative case. The nominative forms are I, we, he, she, they, and who.
Correct: I forgot who won the game. (Who is the subject of the clause.) Correct: John and I joined a sports team at school. (John and I are compound subjects.)
Correct: When Michael comes, he and I are going to build a boat. (He and I are subjects of clause.)
Correct: We girls can do a better job without the boys. (We is the subject.)
Correct: It was he. (The pronoun he follows a linking verb and functions as a predicate nominative.)
Correct: The officers of the class are Marianne, Robert, and I. (Marianne, Robert, and I are predicate nominatives.)
The object of a verb or a preposition is in the objective case. The objective forms are me, us, him, her, them and whom.
Correct: I don't know whom he voted for. (Whom is the object of the preposition.) Correct: Father met Olga and me at the bus station. (Olga and me are objects of the verb met.)
Correct: All the plans for the party were made by Fred and her. (Fred and her are objects of the preposition by.)
Correct: Between John and him there has always been a real friendship. (John and him are objects of the preposition between.)
Note: The indirect object is also in the objective case. The indirect object is the object of to or for understood.
Correct: Aunt Mary sent me a necklace from Bangkok. (Necklace is the direct object; me is the indirect object.)
Correct: Save me a piece of pie. (Me is the object of for understood; piece is the direct object.)
Problem areas. Many speakers and writers think it is more elegant to say John and I rather than John and me. However, that is not necessarily true. John and I is correct when used in the nominative case, and John and me is correct when used in the objective case.
Wrong: The teacher gave her full attention to John and I. (Should be John and me.) Correct: John and I will participate in the 10K race.
Another common error in speech and writing occurs in connection with pronoun that is linked with a noun in the objective case, as with of we students or for we men. Correct: Several of us girls decided to go home for Thanksgiving.
Bending the rules. In informal conversation, expressions like Who did you call for? are common, and most educated persons accept them as appropriate in informal situations, though not in formal writing.
