Tom is thirteen now. He began to study in a middle school two years ago. His home is in a small village and it's nearly five kilometers from the school. He has to get up early in the morning, and run to school. His father hopes to borrow some money to buy a bike for him, but he knows his family is poor. The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball,the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. The word “bag” is useful. It provides us some interesting phrases. For example, “to let the cat out of the bag” means “to tell the secret”. There is an old interesting story about it. Long ago, when people sold things in big cloth bags, a woman asked a man for a pig. The man held up his cloth bag. There seemed to be a little pig in it. The woman asked to see it. When the man opened the cloth bag, a big black cat ran out. Not a pig! The man's secret was out and everyone knew it. Now when someone lets out a secret, he "let's the cat out of the bag". Henry goes to Chicago. He wants to see his uncle. But when he walks out of the station, he can’t find his way. The city is now quite different. Mr Clock has a collection of clocks. He collects them from his childhood. There are about 180 clocks in his house. Some are new and some are old. You can see clocks in every room. He puts these clocks everywhere: on the tables and chairs, in the old car, and even under his bed. The rooms are small for so many clocks. Each clock doesn’t have the same time. Mr Clock likes those clocks very much. He cleans them once a week.

Jane got home late from working place today. When she opened the refrigerator, she was disappointed. There was nothing to eat for dinner. Jane sat down and made a shopping list. She needed a dozen eggs, two pounds of potatoes, half a pound of chicken, and some bread. Jane rushed out of the house and drove to the supermarket. When she got there, she was very upset. There wasn’t any eggs, potatoes, chicken, or bread. She was so tired that she lost her appetite. Finally, she drove home. She went to bed without having dinner.
