Tom is thirteen now. He began to study in a middle school two years ago. His home is in a small village and it's nearly five kilometers from the school. He has to get up early in the morning, and run to school. His father hopes to borrow some money to buy a bike for him, but he knows his family is poor. He doesn't agree with it and keeps running there every day. Now he's very strong and never late for class.
Last week, Tom ran faster and won the race in his school. He told his grandma about the good news as soon as he got home." I broke the records today, Granny," called out the boy. But the old woman wasn't happy. She thought for a while and said," I’m sorry to hear that. We have no money to pay for them, you know!"

It was a sunny day. John Smith was taking his two little boys to play golf. He walked up to the young man at the ticket counter and said, “How much is it to get in?”
The young man answered,”$3.00 for you and $ 3.00 for any kid who is older than six. We let them in free if they are six or younger. How old are they?”John said,“Tom is three and Jack is seven, so I think I should pay $ 6.00.”
The man said,“You are too honest. You can save yourself three dollars if you tell me that the older one is six. I don't know the difference.” John said, “Yes, that may be true, but the kids know the difference.”

Old Carl went to see a doctor. The doctor examined and said, "Medicine can't help you. You must have a good rest. Go to a quiet place for a month. You should go to bed early, drink some milk, walk a lot and smoke one cigar a day." "Thank you very much, " said Old Carl, "I will do everything you say." A month later Old Carl came to the doctor again. The doctor said, "I'm glad to see you. You look much younger." "Oh, doctor," said Old Carl, "I had a good rest. I went to bed early, I drank a lot of milk, and I walked a lot. Your advice certainly helped me. But you asked me to smoke one cigar a day which nearly killed me at first. It's no joke to start smoking at my age."

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over again by the spinning of the earth. At the equator day and night are sometimes of the same length. They are both twelve
hours long. For six months the North Pole is tilted towards the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere.

The word “bag” is useful. It provides us some interesting phrases. For example, “to let the cat out of the bag” means “to tell the secret”. There is an old interesting story about it. Long ago, when people sold things in big cloth bags, a woman asked a man for a pig. The man held up his cloth bag. There seemed to be a little pig in it. The woman asked to see it. When the man opened the cloth bag, a big black cat ran out. Not a pig! The man's secret was out and everyone knew it. Now when someone lets out a secret, he "let's the cat out of the bag". And that is the story where the interesting phrase came from.

Mr Clock has a collection of clocks. He collects them from his childhood. There are about 180 clocks in his house. Some are new and some are old. You can see clocks in every room. He puts these clocks everywhere: on the tables and chairs, in the old car, and even under his bed. The rooms are small for so many clocks. Each clock doesn’t have the same time. Mr Clock likes those clocks very much. He cleans them once a week.
