Dear Sir,

I am wondering if you will approve of a writer’s saying that education now in China actually means that the aggregation of talented brains makes stupid guys, here in many pseudouniversities neither teachers worship academic freedom nor they devote themselves into academic research; instead they are eager to know how the academic titles are conferred on them and how they can get promoted. Finally they successfully turned a university into a philistine officialdom. There is no need for you to read if you are going to give a responding yes to the statement. Since I want to make friends in spite of the difference of age and I think that the letter is significative unless you disapprove of it.

At the beginning I would like to give a brief introduction. My name is Xu Qing, enrolled in English Department as a three-year student of 10th grade. In 2005 I was admitted into ZunYi Medical College and in 2006 I just passed the TEM4. The teachers and the classmates all thought I was excellent because I was keen on participating in extracurricular besides keeping studying English with a belief that there is no end for learning, and I got hurt when discussing with the teachers.

My questions are: 1. I wanted a better translation from the chief teacher for the texts for integrated English, and I was dismissed from being told you could turn to other teachers as I know a little translation.2. GanDie and GanMa(superstitiously they will get you good luck) are so popular in China, so I asked a teacher who just had come back from America about the English version for the two words, he answered in America people dont say GanDie and GanMa, instead they say priest. Finally I got to know the English words for those two ones, they are God father and God mother. Then whats your opinion? So I chose to leave when I upgraded to senior student.

In the later three years I have been in a dilemma whether to get a job or take the entrance examination. In 2010 my mother talked me into the examination so now I am attending An Shun University. Here I felt miserable when I heard that the three-year students are not qualified for the TEM8 unless they have a recommendation letter from the teachers. I dont regard teaching in villages and towns as my ending pose in my career, I should position myself at a higher jumping-off point by means of certificates. So I wrote to you, hoping you could listen to me and help me.

People often say that you are indifferent to fame and wealth, and devoting yourself into teaching, so I wrote the letter with expanded respect with the purpose of becoming an better English major if I was allowed to take part in TEM8 which is important to me since I have already had the certificates for CET 4 and TEM4 and approaching CET6.

I look forward to your prompt response..

Yours faithfully, Xu

Qing
