I feel so happy to hear that you are interested in the Chinese spring festival, which has been enjoying great popularity in our country since ancient times. It is meant to celebrate the end of winter and the coming of spring.
The Spring Festival falls on the eve of the lunar New Year and lasts fifteen days. There are a variety of activities taking place during the Spring festival. First, all family members will return to their hometowns for a traditional family reunion. Not only do they eat traditional food especially fish and dumplings on new year’s eve, but they also watch TV gala until the clock strikes twelve and then set off fireworks to welcome the New Year. Then, on the morning of the New Year's Day, people get up very early to eat dumplings and then to visit their relatives from door to door to wish them a happy new year. What makes children happiest is their lucky money in red paper given by their parents and relatives. In addition, there are also many other customs such as dragon dances and lion dances. All in all, the Spring Festival is the most traditional festival in China with its special features.
I sincerely hope, if possible, that you can come here in China to have a real experience about it.
Yours, Li Hua
提升练习: Dear Smith,
I’m delighted that you have interest in Chinese traditional festivals. I’d like to introduce one of the most ancient and important festivals to you--- the Dragon Boat Festival.
Known as Duan Wu Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in honor of the great poet, Qu Yuan. As is known to us, in order to warn the king, Qu Yuan sacrificed his life to jump into the Miluo river. People were touched by his behavior and set the day he died as a festival to show honor to him. On this important feast day, people eat rice dumplings or zongzi, which is made of glutinous rice, meat and so on. The festival is best celebrated for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern places where there are many rivers and lakes. People gather on the both sides of the river to watch the participants spare no effort to make for the finishing line.
The Dragon Boat Festival is approaching. I sincerely invite you to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with my family. After all, the festival is one thing that must be experienced.
Yours,
Li Hua
