1. Do you think Gatsby deserves to be called “the great”? Why? We think Gatsby doesn’t deserve to be called “the great”, the reasons are as followed:

1) Gatsby took Daisy as his final destination, which led his failure.

Although Gatsby was ambitious, hardworking, generous and passionate, but he was so extremely loyal to his love and Daisy that he could do anything to get it. He did shady business to earn money and social position; he threw luxurious parties just to draw Daisy’s attention; he could take the blame for a death that he did not cause. However, he repaid little from Daisy and got tragedy ending. Gatsby never realized that Daisy wasn’t the girl he loved anymore. 2) For another thing, Gatsby misunderstood the essence of the

American Dream. He was so innocent that he staked everything on his dreams, not realizing that his dreams are unworthy of him. He wasn’t sober enough to be great. Maybe that is the American dream which can show to us. But through the novel, we can have the clear idea that Daisy’s desire was not his dream, it is not Daisy’s fault but his dream has giant vitality and energy. His dream is far behind Daisy and everything exists.

3) At the end of Gatsby’s funeral, we can see that there is not as many

as people in his party. His failure also represents the tragedy of Jazz Age and the Lost Generation.

2. Does “the great light” Gatsby believed in exist in reality? Why or why not?

Absolutely not exist in reality. The reasons are as followed:

1) The green light is vague in the mind of Gatsby, because the green

light which situated at the end of Daisy’s East Egg dock and barely visible from West Egg lawn represents Gatsby’s unattainable dream. Although the color itself can be seen as hope and bright future, Gatsby’s quest for Daisy back is doomed to be impossible. Daisy lived in a material world without being real, breathing dream like air. 2) In the novel, the green light not only represents that innocent Gatsby

looked forward to the future, but also means his longing for his happy past with Daisy. The distinction between ideal and reality was huge. As if American dream between golden past and golden future always suffered from the realistic betrayal and crush.

3) The green light also represents the hazy future, the future that is

forever elusive, as Nick claims in the last page of the novel: "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us..."

4) The green light is a multi-faceted piece of symbolism in the book. It's

most obvious interpretation is that the light is symbolic of Gatsby's longing for Daisy, but that is too simplistic. Daisy is part of it, but the green light means much more.
