Santiago—A Failed Winner of Life
When we mention the famous American writer, Hemingway, we can immediately think of his masterpiece—The Old Man and the Sea. And if we refer to the latter, we can also think of Hemingway at no time. The Old Man and the Sea is one of most classic works of Hemingway. Due to the well-written novel, he successfully won the Nobel Price for Literature in 1954.
I have ever read the Chinese edition of the novel in junior high school, and several days ago, I read the English edition of it, which inspires my deep understanding of the novel. The leading character, Santiago, leaves me an extremely deep impression. According to the novel, Santiago, the old fisherman, was considered definitely and finally salao, for he had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish. Tough the situation was, he never failed to be confident and courageous; old though he was, he never stopped fighting against his fate. The next day he went out fishing alone and fortunately he got a very big marlin which weighed more than 1,500 pounds. After struggling with the marlin for three days, the old man finally killed it. However, this is not the end of the story. The old man encountered a group of shark attacks later and he fought against them bravely, however, only to bring back the fish skeleton in the end.
On the whole, I consider the old man as a failed winner who is brave, skilled, kind but aged and lonely. Following are my own understandings of the old man Santiago.
Firstly, I think he is a contradiction in some way, which exactly shows his kindness and consideration. I pick out two evidences from the novel. When the old man set out to fish, the boy Manolin asked to go with him for several times. The old man refused directly. However, when he was on his skiff alone on the sea, he was always hoping that the little boy was with him, thus facing the challenges and difficulties together with him. As far as I am concerned, it is his deep love and consideration that lead to all that he had said and done. I think one reason that he refused the boy to go fishing with him is that he didn’t want to let the boy down. As he hadn’t got a fish for such a long time, he was uncertain whether he could successfully take a fish or not tomorrow. And the other main reason is his consideration of boy’s safety. But on the other side, he also hoped the boy could go with him to have some necessary experiences and learn some practical fishing skills. The other evidence is his mercy to the big fish he caught. He felt sorry for the fish at times, but he had no choice because as a fisherman, fishing was his duty and career. He is such a simple, pure and kind man who has no evil thoughts at all.
Secondly, as a fisherman, he is quite skillful and persistent. There are only few people who can deal with so big a fish for three days and battle with a pack of fierce and hungry sharks. But the old man did it! How could he make it without proficient skills and strong determination?
Last and most importantly, as my title shows, I think he is a great failed winner! Some people may hold the view that the old man is a failure, for he finally got nothing but the skeleton of the fish. If we only focus on the result, it is true that Santiago
failed. But no one can deny the precious qualities and characters that he showed during the process of catching the fish and wrestling with the sharks. No matter how tough and difficult the situation he faced, he never thought of giving up. He was so brave that he dared to face the thunders and storms of life alone! He was so tenacious that he never complained about anything and gave in to his co-called fate! He is a real winner, not only of his own life but of the whole world as well! He is the model of the “Tough Man” created by Hemingway!
The old man reminds me of the author Hemingway. They are really similar in some respect. Both of them are the tough men. Both of them are brave, determined people who suffered a lot and experienced a lot from the bitter but rich, colorful life. And both of them are failed winner of their lives! We know that Hemingway committed suicide with a gun at the age of sixty-two for some reason. It seems that he lost to his life because he had no courage to continue it. But if we look though his whole life, he deserves the honorable title—winner. He achieved great success in both literature and journalism. He left the world a series of mental treasures. Like Santiago, Hemingway was not only the winner of the process, but a real winner throughout his entire life!
In our daily life, we face the similar situations every now and then. Sometimes even if we had tried our best, at least we think that we did, we might still fail to fulfill our targets, goals and dreams. Are we the failures? Of course not! If we are failures, how can we call the people who even don’t dare to pursuit their dreams? We achieve something meaningful along the way. We learn that how precious the friendship is, how much our parents, teachers and many other people care for us, how great potential we have, and how important the determination, courage, encouragement, appreciation as well as the sincere criticize and suggestions are when we are struggling to overcome a difficulty. We cherish every minute when we are in the blue, dim days, wandering up and down on the crossroads with on idea of what to do and where to go; we also enjoy the fresh air, bright sunshine and beautiful rainbow after the frightening storms. With all these invaluable treasures we pick up along the way of striving, we are no doubt the wealthy and winner of our own lives, though we may fail to realize our ultimate aims. In my opinion, the consequence no longer matters.
All above is what I learn from Santiago. He is the great failed winner, and so is everyone who is always trying to fight for their dreams and never give up, whatever the result may be.
