Alice always wanted to be a singer. Music was the most important thing in her life. She took lessons for years but her voice didn't improve.


Her teacher finally gave up and stopped the lessons, but Alice refused to give up, and one day she decided to give a concert and invited her teacher to attend.

The teacher was worried about what to say after the performance. She knew it would be terrible and it was. She didn't want to tell a lie, but she didn't want to hurt Alice's feelings. either. Daniel Hale Williams became a doctor in Chicago in 1883. After graduation, he taught at Northwestern University's medical school. He was asked by the President of the United States, Grover Cleveland, to go to Washington D.C. to head the Fredmen's Hospital. It was one of the few hospitals for blacks in the country.

He went back to Chicago to help set up the Provident Hospital. Before it opened, Chicago's back doctors could not practise in hospitals. They had to treat patients at home, where operations were performed on dining tables. Dr Williams also helped set up a training school for black nurses.

In 1893, he operated on a man who was dying from a stab wound in the heart. Such a wound had always meant death. But Dr Williams tried to saw the man. Without X-rays or blood transfusions, he opened the man's chest and sewed up his heart. The operation succeeded. The man lived.
