A Grain of Sand

The story goes as follows: A long-distance runner got some grit in his shoes when he ran across a beach. He stopped to take off the shoes hastily and get the sand out slapdash then hurriedly back to the race. But there are still sands in his shoes. These sands rubbed against his feet and afflict him at every step in the following journey. Nevertheless, instead of stopping for a while to take off his shoes and shake out the sands that suffered him, he just kept on going hastily. But when the finishing line was near at hand, he felt too painful in his feet to continue the race and have only to give up eventually. Later with great agony he took off his shoes, only to find that it was just a grain of sand that afflicted him with great pain for hours and even eventually contribute to his giving up. It seems that the impediment to our progress sometimes is just a grain of sand rather than the high mountains or abysses. We may tell lies to avoid being censured for a minor fault. Then we begin to carry two burdens from the very first lie—faults and lies. And we have to tell new lies to conceal our past faults and old lies in the rest of our life and suffer from anxiety and regret. So the very first lie is the grain of sand.
