Natural outdoor environments can offer a variety of benefits, such as improving physical wellbeing and strengthening mental health, yet young people nowadays spend less time outdoors, losing a close connection with natural surroundings and contributing to more sedentary lifestyles. The main cause of this issue is the lure of electronic devices and a key solution would be to promote programs on social media to help youngsters appreciate nature and wildlife.
It is the increasing use of high-tech gadgets, such as smart phones and computers that is pulling younger generation away from the natural world. According to a study conducted by Cornell University, people aged 12 to 18 years old spend three times as many hours with computers each week as they do playing outside. With more time spent on screen activities, such as playing computer games and binge-watching on Netflix, the experiences in nature are bound to be pushed to the side. In addition, as more young people opt for socializing via Facebook and Instagram, opportunities for outdoor play are diminishing.
In order to encourage young people to go out and embrace the nature,communities, schools, and wildlife park agencies should collaborate with online influencers to promote a wide
variety of outdoor activities tailored to the interests of younger generation, such as rainbow run, and launch campaigns on social media to make millennials realize that connection to nature is a cool event that not only offers the chance to explore and take risks through touching and feeling but also is essential to health and social well-being. For example, they could create a hashtag for hiking, and invite teen influencers to share their outdoor experiences of walking through fields and hills or rugged trails and mountains, making it a trend among young people.
In conclusion, youngsters’ diminishing connection to the natural world is a result of being addicted to technological gadgets, but through launching campaigns on social media, young people will gradually become aware of how the natural world works and acquainted with the simple enjoyment of being outdoors
