On June 9, 2015, Mark Joseph Peredo was riding high on his way home from landing an

important client for his marketing business, but he never made it back to celebrate with his family. Executives ( 管 理 人 员) can read about the principles of good leadership and team building. They can attend conferences or hire coaches. But spending an hour watching a horse whisperer ( 马语者) bond with and gain the cooperation of a wild, 1, 000-pound horse can bring home important leadership lessons in an immediate way.

Horses are acutely sensitive to human energy and body language, making them the perfect partners in real-time exercises involving trust and cooperation. “It’s an amazing experience,” said Cece Morken, an executive vice president at Intuit. Morken is one of hundreds of executives every year who have attended leadership demonstrations and training sessions by horse whisperer Grant Golliher and his wife, Jane, who run the Diamond Cross Ranch (牧场) near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The couple has worked with leadership groups from up to 200 organizations, including well-known public companies such as Google, Disney and Toyota, as well as private businesses and government agencies. Their ranch has been in Jane’s family since the 1940s. But the idea for the leadership demonstrations and training wasn’t born until two decades ago, after the couple received a lot of positive responses from a private event that they held for 300 people from Microsoft.

Companies today bring executives to the ranch to learn how Grant Golliher builds a relationship with a horse through a display of respect, patience and non-violent boundary-setting. The philosophy that informs his actions relies heavily on emotional intelligence to communicate and inspire, and that can apply when leading employees too.

A new study suggests a link between being exposed to greenery and reduced desires for alcohol, cigarettes and junk food. It is the first work to look into the possible relationships between exposure to nature, desires and negative emotions. Researchers studied 149 respondents aged 21 to 65 about the green spaces in their neighborhood, the presence of green views from their home,

their access to a garden and how often they used public green spaces.

Researchers found that the presence of visible green spaces contributed to decreased desires. The effect was particularly noticeable when more than 25 percent of a respondent’s view was greenery.

Previous scholarship has dealt mostly with exercise in nature: A 2015 study found that 90-minute group nature walks were effective at fighting against depression and other mood disorders. But for people who struggle with accessibility or don’t have time for a 90-minute walk, this new study suggests just looking out of a window at a tree can help fight off a bad habit. It could influence public health programs and encourage planning for access to green spaces.

“It has been known for some time that being outdoors in nature is linked to a person’s well-being,” lead author Leanne Martin said in a statement. “But simply being able to see green spaces to produce a similar association with desires adds a new dimension to previous research.” Dr. Sabine Pahl, a professor of psychology at the University of Plymouth, calls Martin’s work “a promising first step.”

Martin’s work is part of a growing field of study known as ecotherapy ( 生 态 疗 法), which, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH), addresses human health “against the background of the health of the Earth and its natural ecosystems,” examining how people and nature can interact to each other’s benefit.

A 2018 study from Denmark’s Aarhus University, for example, found that having access to green spaces throughout childhood decreased a person’s risk of developing mental health problems as an adult.
