Movie Title：Billy Elliot

This movie tells us a story about Billy Elliot,an 11-year-old boy lived a life in northeast England in the mid-1980s, together with his gruff father and brother, who were taking part in a massive coal miners’ strike .Billy went to boxing lessons and plays his dead mother’s piano when he was free out of loneliness. By accident, one day Billy noticed a ballet class nearby. Intrigued, taking lessons from Mrs. Wilkinson, a tough-minded teacher, Billy began to fall in love with ballet but keeps his lessons a secret from his family, who struggled to put food on the table while the strike dragged on. When his father finally learnt the truth, a family crisis erupted, and Billy’s struggle to overcome social and male expectations to follow his dreams and his passions. Billy’s hard work, together with the support of his father, is benefit to the success in the end.

The movie reflects the cultural values of culture is the grammar of our behavior ,in order to behave appropriately in any society ,people need to know the culture containing the

rules that make actions meaningful to the people around them .For one thing, when it comes to us ,culture is pervasive .Water is to fish what culture is to human beings living within it .Culture play a important role of who we are and what the surroundings are that we ignore it .We take it for granted. Taking it for example, Billy’s father and brother were fighting to save their livelihoods with the other miners, they both hoped Billy learning boxing .For most of the people, what we have been told and what is used to often decide the whole lifetime. For another thing, there are always communication barriers, which may result in conflict. In this film, it is more than one time that Billy‘s father and brother shout to him hoping to keep him from learning ballet.

Compared with Chinese culture, as a high-context area, communication stress harmony, which is most notable in culture with a Confucian tradition. What’s more, it also emphasize the relationships between the communicators. A number of children were educated that they should follow the arrangement, made by their parents, and for most of the time, they cannot hold the viewpoints. On the contrary , children live with their parents and other relatives ,so that they can consider over and over with the different opinions from family and friends ,and
