My speech experience
When I was a freshman in our university, I decided to take part in an interview to become a member of the Student Union. So I have to give a public speech. In this speech I was asked to do three things—introducing myself such as my name, hometown, character, hobbies and so on; talking about my advantages of joining the Student Union and my understanding and opinions about the Student Union.
Before the speech, I did a lot of things to prepare. For example, I bought a beautiful suit for I wanted to give judges a good impressions. Then I learned some necessary manners. I also wrote a speech draft by myself. That time I thought the speech was a piece of cake. Next day, I came to the competition site with confidence. Then we drew lots for turns. Unfortunately I was the last one and it made me a little nervous. But at that time I told myself , “I would make it!” Then the interview began. To my surprise, everyone was excellent. They strutted to the stage, introduced themselves confidently and answered questions calmly. At that time I was very nervous as if I got butterflies in my stomach. Later, it was my turn to give a speech. A deathly hush fell over the big room and everyone was staring at me. I walked to the stage shuddering with terror. I delivered my speech breathing quickly, biting my nails and trembling my body. All in all, I just wanted to dig a hole for myself on the ground.
Few days later, within expectation I failed in this interview. I was very sad. But as Thomas Paine said, “Failure is the mother of success.” I believe that sort of defeats are only stepping—stones.
