Part A Reading Aloud

Covering an area of over 2,000 km along the tropical east coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet. It is made up of almost 3,000 different reefs, each with a different personality. But it is most famous for its underwater world. Here, there is more life than almost anywhere else on Earth. Many of the creatures are very beautiful but some seem straight out of science fiction. Others can kill in an instant. And just when you think you know the reef, it changes. It is a world of continual surprises, where there is something strange yet wonderful everywhere you look.

Part B Role Play

1. Now please listen to the speaker.

W: Hey, Rob. You look great. How did you spend your holidays this summer?

M: Well, I went to the United States on a working holiday. I worked in Disney Land. It was fantastic.

W: Oh, that sounds cool! How did you organise it?

M: Ever heard of Summer Travel, Maria? It is a program that allows foreign students to take part-time jobs in the United States.

W: Wow, that’s terrific! It must be very difficult to get accepted into the program.

M: Not exactly. Any full-time college or university student who speaks English well can apply.

Quite a few of my friends went with me this time. Students are allowed to work for up to four months during their school break.

What jobs can students do?

M: Lots of jobs. They generally work in service jobs in stores, libraries, hotels, restaurants and amusement parks. But students cannot work in private homes.

Can each student take part in the program only once?/Does each student have only one chance to take part (in this program)?

M: Well, actually students can do it more than once. My friend Kim did it the second time this summer. But students should begin to gather information a year before they want to travel. There is a lot to prepare.

What (kind of) information should students research/look for/search for?

M: Well, students should research the different sponsor organizations for the program because although they all arrange jobs for students, only a few of them may arrange housing. Finding a place to live can be really challenging.

Part C Story Retelling

tailor (裁缝) wooden box (木箱子) treasure (财宝) funeral (葬礼) company (陪伴)

Once there was an old tailor who lived alone in a small town. He had three sons but they seldom came to see him. Not many people came to his store, so when he grew too old to work, he didn’t have much money left. He was often worried about himself, until one night he thought of a plan. The next morning he found a large wooden box, filled it, locked it up and put it in his kitchen. The next time his sons came for dinner, they noticed the box and asked what was inside. “Oh, nothing,” the old man replied, “just some things I’ve been saving.” The sons thought the box must be full of all the gold their father had saved over the years. They decided that they needed to protect the treasure and took turns living with their old father. Several years later , the old father died. When the funeral was over, the sons searched the house and found the key to the box. When they unlocked the box, they found it full of stones. They poured all the stones out. Then the three brothers stared inside, where they read a note on the bottom: Thank you sons, for your company.
