The chart compares the percentage of elders in from 1940 to 2040 in Japan, Sweden and USA.
The proportion of seniors aged 65 and above in Sweden is expected to nearly increase four-fold, rising from 7% to 26% during the whole period, in spite of some fluctuation. Similarly, a moderate rise of 14% can be found in the figure for USA in
the same century, where there is a period of stability at 15%.
The percentage of elders in Japan decreased minimally from 5% to 3% in around 1987, before leveling out in the next 27 years, after which it rose moderately to 10% in 2030, when the following decade will witness a significant growth to the peak at 27%.
Overall, USA had the largest proportion of elders at the beginning, while the figure for Japan will overtake that of Sweden and USA in around 2034, becoming the largest since then.
Overall, expenditure on teacher salaries remained the highest throughout the whole period; as to that on insurance, the reverse was the case. It is noteworthy that the gap among the five categories narrowed during the twenty years.
