Unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came?

1.Get the students to be able to know the new words and expressions they learnt in this part. 2.Review the use of “ while, when”. Students can make sentences with them.
3.Help students be able to know how to use the past progresive tens to describe the past events. 4.Through reading practice, students can get information from the reading to improve their reading skills. Key sentences:
1. What was the neighborhood like after the storm? 2. With no light outside, it felt like midnight.
3. Ben’s dad was putting pieces of over the windows while his mom was making sure the flashlights and radio were working? 情感态度价值观
Help stduents to understand and have the spirit of helping others when they are in trouble.

Teaching Procedures: Step 1 Revision
1. Ask students to talk about what they were doing last night in groups of four then give a report.
2.Guide students to make sentences by using “ while ,when”.Use some pictures to guide students. 2. Show some pictures on PPT. Guide students to ask and answer to practice :Where was he /she when the rainstorm came? What was he/ she doing? At the same time teach the new words: report, area,beat. Step 2 Presentation
Ask the students to look at the pictures on the screen to learn the main words: wood, window, flashlight, light, matches,apart. And the have students to look at the pictures and read the passage quickly and answer the question “ what happened in Ben’s neighborhood ?” Step 3 Reading
1.Move to 3a. Read the passage quickly and answer the following questions 1).What was the weather like before the heavy rain started? 2).When did Ben fall asleep?
3).What was the neighborhood like after the storm? 4).What did ben and his family do after that?
2.3b Read the passage again and complete the sentences using information from the passage.
1) When the news on TV was reported, strong winds were _____________ outside. 2)While Ben’s mom was making sure the radio was working, his dad ________________.
3) Ben _____________________ when the heavy rain finally started. 4) When Ben _______________at 3:00 a.m., the wind _________________. Step 4 Discussion
Move to 3c. Guide students to discuss the questions with a partner.
“Although the storm broke many things apart, it brought families and neighbors closer together.” What other can bring people closer together? How can we help each other in times of difficulty?
Show some pictures of natural accidents to guide students. Help student to list what they can do to help these who are in trouble. Step 5 Language points learning
1.Help students to find out some important language points. Explain them and give some
examples.
2.List some important phrases for students to learn. Step 6. Homework
1.Read the text and retell the story. 2.Preview the next lesson.
