Lesson Plan
1. Teaching contents
(1) Vocabulary: take down, pupil, tower, in silence, terrorist, shocked (2) Sentence patterns:
We were eating dinner in the kitchen when we heard the news on the radio. (3) The use of past progressive tense.
(4) The reading material——Do you remember what you were doing?
2. Objectives
2.1 Instructional Objectives (language knowledge and language skills) By the end of the class, 90% students are able to:
1) Recognize and read the new words “take down, pupil, tower, in silence, terrorist, shocked;
2) Apply some reading tips into a reading material, such as predicting the overall meaning, and skimming for the “topic sentence” of each paragraph.
2.2 Educational Objectives (affect, learning strategy and cultural awareness) By the end of the class, 90% students are able to:
1) talk about and discuss some important events by using some sentences with past progressive tense. For example, we were eating dinner in the kitchen when we heard the news on the radio;
conclude/summarize the the content of the passage by drawing a mind-map; 3) get to know that some important events have meaning to history. 2.3 Personal Objectives
1) Encourage students to speak out their ideas in the class; 2) Manage the class more effectively in English. 3. Focal and difficult points
1) Use the sentences with past progressive tense to talk about the past events, for example, “She was working in her office when the two towers were taken down”.
2) Apply some reading tips into a reading material, such as predicting the overall meaning, and skimming for the “topic sentence” of each paragraph. 3) Conclude the content of the passage by drawing a mind-map.
4. Teaching procedures
Stage 1 Lead-in
Free talk: Present some pictures about some events in China/in the world and let
students talk about what they were doing at that time.
Stage 2 Pre-reading
Step 1 Background information
Play the videos about Dr. Martin Luther King and 911 event to let the students get to know the passage easily.
Step 2 Vocabulary preparation
Present some key words or some difficult vocabulary through some pictures. Step 3 Predicting
Look at the title of the passage and try to guess what will it talk about? Stage 3 While-reading Step 1 Fast reading
1. Read the passage quickly, and choose two pictures it refers to(涉及)___. 2. Try to divide the passage into two parts. Step 2 Scanning ——Q&A
1. Read Para.1 & Para.2 to get more information about the event happened to Dr. Martin Luther King.
2. Read and answers the questions
Q1. What was Robert Allen doing at that time? Q2. How did Robert know the news?
Q3. How did Robert's parents feel when they heard the news?
Step 3 Scanning --- Mind-map
1.Read Para.3 and Para.4 carefully and draw your mind-map about the event in para. 3~4.
2. Let two students share their mind-map with the class.
Step 4 Detailed reading --- T or F
Read the passage again and mark T/F/NG for the statements in 2c. Stage 3 Post-reading
Discussion:What does the writer want to tell us through this passage?
5. Assignment
Make notes about an event you remember well and share it with your partner.
