The Mid-Autumn Festival is a family celebration and usually many outdoor activities are arranged especially for the event. On the evening of a Mid-Autumn Festival, families stay up late and get together eating moon cakes and gazing at the moon.

China's Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunisolar month (see Mid-Autumn Festival Dates), which is in September or October. The festival is the second most important festival after the Spring Festival to Chinese people. Every year, when the festival comes people go home from every corner of the country and the world to meet their family and have dinner with them.

Chang'e and Hou Yi

Long long ago, there were 10 suns in the sky.

They burnt all the plants on the earth. People were dying.

One day, a hero whose name was Hou Yi used his bow and arrows to shoot down nine of them. All the people on the earth were saved.

One day, the queen of heaven gave Hou Yi a bottle elixir that could make Hou Yi become an immortal, but the elixir was only efficacious for one person. Hou Yi did want to become an immortal, but he wanted to stay with his beautiful wife Chang'e more, so he didn't drink the elixir and asked his wife Chang'e to keep it for him.

Hou Yi was becoming more and more famous after he shot down the nine suns and more and more men wanted Hou Yi to be their master. Most of them were accepted by Hou Yi. Not every student of Hou Yi had good morality. Feng Meng, one of his students, wanted to seize his elixir. One day, Hou Yi went hunting with his students, but Feng Meng pretended to be ill and stay at home. When making sure Hou Yi had gone he went to Hou Yi's house and tried to force Chang'e to give him the elixir. Chang'e knew she couldn't defeat Feng Meng so she drank the elixir immediately. The elixir made her become an immortal and fly higher and higher. Finally, she stopped on the moon.

From then on, people often pray to Chang'e for fortune and safety. During the Mid-Autumn

Festival they offer lots of foods to Chang'e.

Actually, this song lyrics was from a famous poem Shui diao ge tou (traditional Chinese: 水調歌; simplified Chinese: 水调歌头) which made by a Song Dynastypoet Su Shi, commonly known as Su Dongpo.

English translation:

Bright moon, when did you appear?

Lifting my wine, I question the dark night sky. Tonight in the palaces and halls of heaven what year is it, I wonder?

I would like to ride the wind, make my home there, Only I hide in a jade room of a beautiful mansion, As I could not bear the cold of high altitudes. So I rise and dance and play in your pure beams, this human world how can it compare with yours? Circling red chambers, low in the curtained door, you shine on the sleepless. Surely you bear us no ill will

why then must you be so round at times when we humans are parted! People have their grieves and joys, their togetherness and separation, The moon has its dark and clear times, its waxings and wanings. Situations are never ideal since long ago. I only hope we two may have long long lives,

So that we may share the moons beauty even though we are a thousand miles apart.
