The Twelve Chinese Zodiac Animals: A Short Story

Long ago, the Jade Emperor of Heaven wanted to create a special way to measure time on Earth. He decided to hold a grand race and invited all the animals to participate. The first twelve animals to cross the river would be honored by having a year named after them.

On the day of the race, the animals gathered by the riverbank. The rat was the smallest, but also the cleverest. It asked the strong ox for help. The kind ox agreed to carry the rat on its back. As they reached the other side, the rat quickly jumped ahead and became the first animal to cross the finish line, winning the first year of the Chinese zodiac.

The ox came second, and the tiger, who was fast and fierce, took the third place. The rabbit, using its agility, hopped across the river and came fourth. Following closely behind were the dragon and the snake, while the horse galloped gracefully to claim the seventh position.

The hardworking goat, the smart monkey, and the proud rooster helped each other to cross and secured the eighth, ninth, and tenth places, respectively. The loyal dog arrived, but it had been delayed by playing in the water, so it finished eleventh.

Last to reach the finish line was the pig. It enjoyed a good meal during the race and took its time. Although it came last, it was joyful and became the twelfth animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Each year in the Chinese zodiac is named after one of these twelve animals,


repeating in a cycle. People born in each animal's year are said to inherit its characteristics. The rat is known for its wit, the tiger for its courage, and the dragon for its power, just to name a few.
