Read the text and answer the questions:

On the second Monday of October, Americans celebrate Colombus Day. They remember Columbus’s first voyage to America in 1492. Christopher Colombus was probably born in 1451 in Genoa, a city located on the north-west coast of Italy. At that time, Genoa was a very important comercial port and the young Colombus often went there and watch the ships leave until the horizon. At that time, a lot of people thought the world was flat, but Colombus believed it was round and he wanted to test his idea.

He had the idea of going to India, Asia, Japan and China by sailing the west because he believed the earth was round and as so, it was possible to make it. He asked for support to several kingdoms: France, Portugal, U.K... but in the end, it was the Spanish queen Isabella and king Ferdinand who helped him to test his idea.

They gave him three ships: Pinta, Niña and Santa María, but it was difficult to find sailors for the voyage because it was long and dangerous. Finally, Colombus found about ninety men and he was ready to leave. He left on the 3rd of August 1492 and he navigated with maps and a magnetic compass. Although the trip was really difficult, all three ships arrived to the first islands that were going to be lands of Spain.

His voyage changed the future of navigation and in fact, those “New Lands” were plenty of resources and as so, they established colonies there. They found a lot of new plants, animals, different food...

The first Colombus Day was in 1792, to celebrate Colombus’ discovery, despite the fact that he had always believed he had arrived to India.
