A colorful, delicious holiday



Chinese people will a fun traditional holiday next week. Wednesday, the fifth day in May of the lunar calendar , was the Dragon Boat Festival. People celebrated the festival with zongzi and dragon boat races. But do you know the story behind these traditions? The best known story is about Qu Yuan (340-277 BC), a poet from the state of Chu during the Warring States Period over 2,000 years ago. Qu was a good officer for Chu. But a few bad officers told the king to drive Qu out of Chu because they wanted more power. Over the next 20 years, Qu travelled to many places and wrote poems on what he saw and thought. When he heard that the state of Qin had taken over Chu, he lost all hope for his country. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 BC, he tied a stone to himself, jumped into the Miluo River in Hunan and died. At the news of the poet's death, people hurried out in boats to try to save him. They put sticky zongzi into the water as fish food, because they didn't want fish to eat Qu's body. Now, people race dragon boats and eat sticky rice dumplings to remember Qu. Over the years, the Dragon Boat Festival has spread from China to other countries.
