Confucius is a much-respected ancient thinker in China. He was born in the Spring and Autumn Period, 551BC. Confucianism is a philosophy about how Chinese people behaved and thought in the past two millennia. It is a moral code and ethical system.
The core of Confucianism is to take your relationships seriously and to cultivate moral character. Confucius said, “What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.” This means that you should think and consider how you want to be treated, and then do the same to others. Other important aspects of Confucianism are respect for educators and ancestors and the Five Relationships: between ruler and minister, father and son, husband and wife, elder and younger brother, and friend and friend.
Confucianism also encourages education. Confucius believed that learning was essential for self-improvement. He said “I teach and learn”, meaning that everyone needs to learn and improve regularly.
Confucius was living in a time of social chaos and upheaval, and he wanted to provide a framework of order, morality, and respect. His philosophy still influences Chinese people today, shaping the way they think and socialize.
