Long用作不及物动词，以为“可望、极想”。它的用法有： 1、后接介词for，然后再接宾语：

The people there long for peace（freedom）。那里的人民渴望和平（自由）。 The children are longing for the festival。孩子们渴望着节日的来临。

He never found the book for which he longed。他一直没有找到他极想要的那本书。 2、 后接不定式：

Parents longed to see their sons return from war。父母渴望儿子从战场归来。 Tom longs to see his friends。汤姆渴望见到他的朋友们。

3、 long for后接含不定式的复合结构，即long for sb.to do sth.，意为“渴望某人作谋事”。如：

He longed for his father to buy him anew bike。他渴望他父亲给他买辆自行车。

The teacher longed for all his students to pass all the exams。那位老师极想让他所有的学生能通过所有的考试。
