Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is the most important celebration for Chinese people all over the world. It marks the first day of the lunar calendar and brings together family and friends in what’s considered China’s biggest holiday.
In the days leading up to Spring Festival, people make careful preparations. Homes are thoroughly cleaned and
decorated with lucky red ribbons and paper cutouts. Families also make traditional food such as dumplings and Tangyuan (sweet rice balls) and give each other presents.
On New Year’s Day, children get lucky money in red envelopes from relatives. Fireworks are set off to celebrate and ward off the evil spirit Nian.
In Chinese culture, the New Year is a time for good luck, so families express their best wishes to each other. The Chinese phrase for “Happy New Year” is “Xin Nian Kuai Le” (新年快乐).
To welcome the new year and wish each other good luck, people usually have dinners with their family on New Year’s Eve. Kids often give performances to entertain guests during the
dinner.
Since the Spring Festival has become a global phenomenon, English speakers around the world say “Happy Chinese New Year” to honor this special holiday.
In conclusion, the Spring Festival is not just a celebration of the new year but also a time for family, friends, and neighbors to come together and reflect on the past, present, and future. The festive atmosphere, spectacular decorations, and delicious food will always remain in our hearts, no matter how far away we are from home.
