When I traveled to Rome, I enjoyed a few moments of relaxation on the Spanish Steps, which are a set of steps dating from 1723. Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck once sat on the stairway in the movie Roman Holiday. My stop there felt entirely pleasant.
But the Roman government is not so pleased. It recently passed a law that makes sitting on the Spanish Steps punishable by up to 400 euros. Gone are the selfie-taking（自拍）teens and the tired tourists just trying to catch their breath after enjoying one of the sightseeing spots of Rome.
The current look of the Spanish Steps—without people relaxing on them—may look strange to anyone who has seen the steps in movies or photos over the years. People have been hanging out there for centuries, after all. But I appreciate the government’s decision. The mayor and City Council are struggling to protect their historical landmarks, as are the leaders of many of Europe’s cultural capitals. A 93-year-old grandma has become a social media star together with her 27-year-old grandson. Seven years ago, Ross Smith was in college at the University of Dayton when he started filming short videos on social media. In one of his clips, he asked his grandma Kana to block one of his basketball shots. And from there everything changed.

“Honestly, most people—and I was probably one of those people at the time—don’t have respect for the elderly,” Smith explained. “Once you’re old, you should go away and go to a nursing home.
